Warm greetings Graduates
Sincere congratulations to you all for successfully navigating the way along a challenging academic journey to achieve a milestone of note in your lives – graduation! The academic qualification you receive from the University of KwaZulu-Natal is your passport to the high road and a better future, whether it involves further study to improve your basket of knowledge and skills or going out into the workplace to begin an income-earning career.
COVID-19 has adversely impacted on the lives of many people in South Africa and around the world, with the fight against the killer virus – which we all need to be involved in – taking place in unchartered territory against an invisible enemy. A tough battle still lies ahead for us.
On a very positive note amid the concern, I am grateful to UKZN, our Alma Mater, for once again organising this virtual graduation ceremony. A brilliant, innovative Plan B since large gatherings are still not permitted under the conditions of the national lockdown, making a live celebration of this very special occasion possible – the culmination of many years of study by our graduands who are undoubtedly unsung heroes and heroines.
Graduands, please take a moment, perhaps a few minutes, to reflect on your campus experience over the years, rejoicing in it with friends and family. This is a unique time and experience in your lives.
I welcome all current graduands to a massive organisation and University structure known as Alumni, which falls under the banner of Convocation. By virtue of completing a qualification at UKZN, you automatically become a member of Convocation which is represented in the highest decision-making structure of corporate governance at the University known as Council. You now have a voice in UKZN governance matters!
This is only the beginning – the sky is the limit for you! I urge you to flex your muscles and go out there and Inspire greatness in all that you do.
Good luck in your future endeavours and please: stay safe and take care.
Mr Fanle Sibisi
President: UKZN Convocation
